Pompeo responds to US travel ban on Army Commander Shavendra Silva
Visiting US Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo says the travel ban imposed by his Government on Commander of the Sri Lanka Army Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva and his immediate family is a legal process in the United States of America.
The top US official said this in response to a question raised by a reporter during a joint press briefing with Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena this morning.
Pompeo further said the US Government will continue to review the travel ban.
“we want to make sure that we get it (information) technically, factually, and legally right. We will continue to do it”, he added.
Earlier today, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva said that the Foreign Minister had informed him that the travel ban will be taken up for discussion with Pompeo, who is on a 2-day visit to Sri Lanka.
The Army Commander told Swarnavahini, that the matter was included in the Minister’s agenda for the discussion scheduled with Pompeo today.
He further said that the Opposition Leader too had requested from the Government during recent Parliament proceedings to take up the matter for discussion with the visiting US Secretary of State.
In February 2020, the US imposed sanctions on Shavendra Silva for alleged war crimes committed at final stages of the war against the Tamil Tigers in 2009. (NewsWire)
