COVID-19 revival limits facilities for Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa CKD patients
The Anuradhapura Methsiripaya has been reserved for treating the virus affected patients. This three storey building was built near the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital solely to provide treatment and comforts to the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients who visit the Anuradhapura Kidney Diseases Treatment Hospital, majority of them come from distant places such as Padaviya for dialysis and kidney transplanting surgeries.
According to the hospital report, about 2,000 kidney patients in the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa Districts have registered with it for treatment. Reportedly, 200-300 CKD patients die annually of kidney diseases and other complexities such as heart attacks and paralysis.
A majority of kidney patients in the Anuradhapura District live in Medawachchiya and the lowest number of patients has been reported from Palagala. The highest number in Polonnaruwa has been reported from Medirigiriya and the lowest number from Welikanda.
The majority of CKD patients come from low income families and they are mostly men, the report said.
