Army Commander provides update on curfew

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is not keen on continuing with the quarantine curfew imposed in various parts of the country, from next Monday (09), the National Operations Centre for the Prevention of COVID-19 (NOCPC) said.

Head of the NOCPC Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva said that concerns were raised with regard to the issues faced by a majority of the public, while measures are to be taken to enable the public to engage in daily activities without contracting the coronavirus.

During a meeting with the NOCPC yesterday, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had made the observations, while he had also stated that the coronavirus can be contained if the public constantly follow the health guidelines issued on the prevention of COVID-19.

Army Commander Shavendra Silva said that based on the current situation, they hope to lift the curfew imposed to the entire Western Province from Monday (09), which as per the earlier announcement comes to an end at 05.00am on Monday (09).

The President’s attention was drawn to the measures required to take forward the country and develop the economy, while the issues faced by daily wage earners as a result of the lockdown was also highlighted during the meeting.

Stating that its must be ensured that the public do not contract the virus or become asymptomatic after the curfew is lifted, the Head of the NOCPC said the situation can only be averted if the public constantly adhere to the health guidelines.

Army Commander Shavendra Silva further pointed out that it is essential for people placed in quarantine to adhere to the quarantine instructions provided by health authorities. (NewsWire)
