Only COVID-19 negative tourists can enter BIA - State Minister
Despite the reopening of the airports, tourists would only be allowed into the country if they test negative for COVID-19 and thereafter undergo a 14-day quarantine procedure, said State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID Disease Control Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle.
State Minister Dr. Fernandopulle was speaking during a surprise visit to the Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake to look into the current COVID-19 preventative measures being implemented and to also inquire into the measures being implemented to facilitate the return of tourists into the country.
The State Minister closely observed the measures being followed at the BIA regarding incoming passengers and the outbound passengers and the dedication in which the BIA staff and security personnel perform their duties towards maintaining proper safety measures. She visited all the areas where passengers frequent and looked into the safety measures, facilities provided for passengers and also looked into the information being provided to passengers.
Having looked into the time span spent at the airport by passengers arriving at the BIA, she instructed the airport authorities to ensure that all passengers arriving in the country complete all formalities and are directed to quarantine facilities within a time period of two hours. Responding to media queries regarding her observations during the visit, State Minister Fernandopulle said that she was satisfied with the efforts taken by the BIA staff and security to address the COVID-19 pandemic, and appreciated their efforts in all spheres of their duties.
Secretary of the Ministry of Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID Disease Control Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva BIA Manager G.K.D.C.D. Samaratunga and several other officers accompanied the State Minister on the inspection tour.
