‘Kandy Hospital will soon conduct 1,500 PCR tests daily’

Virologist Dr. Rohitha Muthugala said that about 700 PCR tests are conducted daily at the Kandy National Hospital and the number will be increased to 1,500 soon.

Samples from the North Western, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Northern Provinces are sent to the Kandy National Hospital, he said.

Gem and Jewellery Industries and Prison Management and Prison Rehabilitation State Minister Lohan Ratwatte handed a PCR machine over to the Kandy National Hospital at the Gem and Jewellery Business Association on December 24.

Dr. Rohitha said that the Kandy National Hospital has two PCR testing machines and the Hospital receives about 1,000 PCR samples daily from various parts of the country and of them, about 200 to 300 samples remain undone every day.

Hospital Acting Director Iresha Fernando said that the sector provides its fullest assistance despite the increase in the number of COVID-19 infections. “However, patients are not admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, (ICU),” she said.

Gem and Jewelkery Authority Chairman Thilak Weerasinghe and Gem and Jewellery Business Association President Mohamed Rifai were present.
