Hospital attendant dies in accident
A hospital medical attendant who was receiving treatment at the Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital (KTH) has died due to serious head and shoulder injuries sustained in an accident, the post-mortem held at the hospital revealed.
The hospital attendant (51), a father of one was attached to the Walasmulla Hospital and a resident of Rotumba, Matara.
He had been seriously injured in a road accident that occurred while he was taking a patient from Walasmulla Hospital to Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in an ambulance on June 25. The ambulance veered off the road at the Hakmana - Denagama Junction.
He was later admitted to the Walasmulla Hospital where a Rapid Antigen Test confirmed that he was infected with the COVID-19.
He was subsequently transferred to KTH, where he was treated at Ward 36 and thereafter transferred to the Intensive Care Unit.
Although the hospital attendant had been infected with COVID-19, the post mortem revealed that he had died due to serious injuries to the head and shoulders sustained in the road accident, Additional Coroner Chandrarasena Lokuge of KTH asserted.
The autopsy was conducted by Assistant Judicial Medical Officer Samadhi Dandeniyaarachchi. The cremation of the deceased hospital attendant was held at the Hikkaduwa crematorium in accordance with quarantine rules.
