Probe to determine whether monkey species infected with COVID-19 virus
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Peradeniya has commenced investigations to determine whether a species of monkey has been infected with the COVID-19 virus after it was confirmed that a lion had been infected at the Dehiwala Zoo.
Molecular Biology Nutrition and Biology Laboratory, Department of Veterinary Science, Senior Lecturer Dr. Dilan A. Satharasinghe said that steps have been taken to examine the mucous membranes of a monkey that has symptoms of this species.
He said the COVID-19 virus was now more likely to be transmitted from humans to cats and that dogs were less likely to be infected.
He said that in the current situation, all zoo animals should be taken care of and at present the COVID-19 infected lion is under the supervision of zoo veterinary officers.
Humans, chimpanzees and gorillas are among the most vulnerable species to the virus. Deer, buffalo and dolphins and rat species have been identified as vulnerable. Siberian Tigers and sheep are medium risk animals for infection.
