360,000 vehicles entered Colombo last week
Around 360,000 vehicles had arrived in Colombo last week with 95 per cent of those vehicles belonging to those engaged in essential services, Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.
Out of these vehicles, about 15,000 vehicles attempting to enter Colombo violating the provincial boundaries have been diverted and occupants of 8,000 vehicles violating the quarantine travel restrictions in a serious manner have been arrested and produced before Courts.
Roadblocks have been set up at 14 entry and exit points in the Western Province and all vehicles will be inspected to see if the vehicles are required for essential services and those arriving have been instructed by the authorities to report to work on the relevant day(s).
However, the police spokesman said that most of the vehicles that arrived in Colombo were carrying members of essential services with the highest number of vehicles belonging to members of banks and financial institutions which have been kept open during the travel restrictions. Also, vehicles belonging to the Health Services, Police and the Armed Forces and Government agencies have entered the city of Colombo respectively.
Vehicles have also arrived carrying patients for hospitalization and other medical purposes, departures for airport, etc. During a search operation carried out at 14 roadblocks at 14 exits and entrances in the Western Province until 6.00 am yesterday (17), 105 persons in 61 vehicles were apprehended by the police while crossing Provincial boundaries.
DIG Rohana said that quarantine travel orders were currently 95 percent compliant and that it was regrettable that a minority of about five percent were violating them, and called for support to reduce the spread of COVID-19 disease as much as possible in the light of the emergence of new variants of concern in Sri Lanka.
