Lecturer from Kilinochchi Campus dies in wild elephant attack within university premises
A 32-year-old female lecturer of the Killinochchi Campus of the University of Jaffna has died after being attacked by an elephant within the Campus premises.
An official from the Office of the Registrar at the Jaffna University told Newswire that the university is a vast area, with certain parts including the teacher’s quarters extending into the jungle.
The lecturer and another colleague are said to have visited a Buddhist temple in the jungle and when returning had accidentally come upon an elephant close to their quarters around 08.00 p.m. yesterday.
The elephant, which had got startled by their abrupt appearance had attacked the female lecturer who was the closest, throwing her into a distance, while the other lecturer is said to have fled the scene, the official said.
The female lecturer, who is said to have sustained severe brain injuries in the attack and had been placed on life- support after being admitted to the Jaffna Teaching hospital, had succumbed to injuries today.
The deceased has been identified as a 32- year- old resident of Kelaniya and a lecturer attached to the Department of Engineering and Technology of the Faculty of Technology. (Newswire)
