Ethnicity of parents to remain on new digital birth certificate
The Registrar General’s Department has issued a statement clarifying the changes proposed to the new digital birth certificate.
The Department said details on the ethnicity of parents will remain on the new application form.
Yesterday it was announced that all details pertaining to race and ethnicity will be removed from the form and the newborn will be registered under a common category title Sri Lankan.
Details on the marital status of parents were also removed as previously it had cause inconvenience to children when being enrolled in school.
Following this announcement, Minister Wimal Weerawansa said Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has informed the authorities to rectify the mistake of removing the reference to race in new birth certificates.
Speaking at a rally, Minister Wimal Weerawansa objected to the move and assured that the current leadership will never allow the proposed changes to take place.
However, the Registrar General’s Department today clarified that the details on the ethnicity of parents will remain on the new application form.
The Department further said the new digital birth certificate will be issued to the public after the completion of ongoing necessary measures with regard to it. (Newswire)
