Driver of tipper truck involved in Hakmana crash arrested

The driver of a tipper truck involved in the accident that killed a Police Constable (PC) and injured two other Police officers in Hakmana has been arrested.

Earlier today, six Police teams were deployed to apprehend the suspect.

Officers manning a roadblock in the Kirindha Town in Hakmana had attempted to stop the tipper truck which was traveling towards Hakmana for inspection at around 11 last night.

The truck had sped on without heeding the instructions, prompting the officers to inform officers at the next roadblock to inspect the vehicle.

The officers at the next roadblock had stopped the vehicle and were inspecting it when officers from the previous roadblock had arrived at the location.

They had released the driver of the truck after imposing a fine and warning him of reckless driving.

However the driver of the tipper truck is said to have crashed onto the roadblock 10 minutes later, killing one officer and injuring two other officers, and had reportedly fled the area.

The deceased Police Constable was identified as a 36 year- old officer attached to the Hakmana Police Station.

Meanwhile, the truck was found by the Police abandoned at the compound of a house in the Kattakaduwa area in Hungama. (Newswire)
