“Learn 10 new words every day” Sajith responds to criticism of his “pompous English” on social media

A live online discussion was held last Wednesday (20th) under the theme of “COVID-19: A New World Order – Education: Thinking outside the box” with the Leader of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and former Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, where young and experienced professionals in the field of education took part in discussing about the field of education in an era hit by the continuous threat of Covid-19.

Once the discussion was reaching towards its end, the host of the discussion asked the SJB Leader about his usage of English, particularly on social media, which has come under a lot of criticism for the reason that it is too “heavy” for his audience to understand. Further to that, he also asked whether someone else operates Sajith Premadasa’s social media accounts for him.

In response to the queries, Mr. Premadasa told in a lighter vein that there was a notion among some that he doesn’t know English and now people think that he knows too much English. He also pointed out that there’s no external persons involved in handling his SM accounts, but himself.

Further to the response, he said that it was his father Late R. Premadasa’s advice to learn at least 10 new English words each day and that such practice has made him what he is today. Ending the conversation on yet another lighter note, he also stated that those who want to learn, may note down 10 English words from his social media posts each day with a dictionary or thesaurus’s alongside them, which will make Sri Lanka a country with better English literacy.
