Government makes wearing masks mandatory for everyone in Pakistan

The government has made wearing masks mandatory for everyone across the country, Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Health Dr Zafar Mirza said.

“People getting exposed to crowded places such as markets and public transport have to specially abide by this order,” he said in a media briefing on Friday.

Dr Mirza expressed his disappointment over the “careless and irresponsible” behavior shown by the public. “I plead to you to please follow the SOPs given by the government,” he said, adding that wearing masks was no longer an option.

We have also given out instructions and guidelines as to how and what masks to wear, PM’s assistant reiterated.

Dr Mirza said that this Eid was different than the ones before it. “The biggest difference is that this year we will not greet each other with hugs and will maintain distance,” he revealed.

You can greet each other and exchange wishes but only following the rules of social distancing, he implored.

Talking about Eid prayers, Dr Mirza said that the SOPs at mosques will remain the same as announced by the government earlier. “Like we said before, try converting your homes into mosques and pray at home,” he advised.

Those who still opt to go to mosques should, however, strictly follow all the precautionary protocols. Children and people over 50 will not be allowed inside mosques.

The special assistant also encouraged people to help the needy around them as they have been the most affected by the lockdown. They can be people in your neighbourhood or family, he added.

Pakistan has reported its highest one-day of more than 2,000 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the nation-wide toll to 50,694. A total of 50 people have lost their lives.
