Headlines 9am: Coronavirus death toll rises, street crime increases

Here are SAMAA TV’s headlines from the 9am bulletin.

  • Street crime has risen as the lockdown is eased. In Federal B Area thieves locked the house from the outside then stole the car’s sideview mirrors. In Dadu, a wholesale rice store was robbed.
  • A child was killed in Islamabad’s Sector I-9. The 10-year-old was shot when his uncle was cleaning his pistol. The uncle has been arrested and confessed to the crime. He initially claimed unknown motorcyclists had killed his nephew.
  • Pakistan’s coronavirus death toll has crossed 1,000. Thirty-two deaths were reported in one day while 2,193 new cases were reported. The number of reported cases in the country has now touched 48,091 while 14,155 people have recovered.
  • The report on the sugar shortage has been prepared and will be presented during the federal cabinet meeting called by Prime Minister Imran Khan.
  • The Sindh government has allowed congregational Eid and Jummatul Wida. Ministers said people will have to follow the federal government’s SOPs. Eid prayers will be held in open grounds and where there are too many people, prayers can be held twice.
  • Trains have resumed service across Pakistan after two months. Trains are only 60% full to ensure social distancing is practiced. After the Punjab government’s successful negotiations with transporters, fares on GT Road have been reduced by 15 to 20%. Passengers must leave a seat when travelling on the motorway but there will be no reduction in fares.
  • The 27th of Ramazan was marked at homes and in mosques.
