Seven SP COVID Treatment Centres filled to capacity
Seven of the 25 COVID Medical Treatment Centres in the Southern Province are currently overcrowded with COVID infected patients, Southern Provincial Health Services Director’s Office sources disclosed.
The Health Services Director’s Office states that the number of patients at these Medical Treatment Centres exceeds the existing bed capacity. The Deiyandara Corona Medical Treatment Centre has a capacity of 24 beds. Twenty- three COVID patients are currently being treated at the Urubokka Medical Treatment Centre which has only 20 beds. The bed capacity of the Kamburugamuwa COVID Medical Treatment Centre is 135 whereas the number of COVID patients receiving treatment is 153. The COVID Medical Treatment Centre in Morawaka has a bed capacity of 52 and 53 COVID patients are being treated there. The Lunugamvehera COVID Medical Treatment Centre has a bed capacity of 20 and 23 patients are being treated while the Ambalantota COVID Treatment Centre has a bed capacity of 79 whereas 85 patients are currently being treated. Meanwhile, 168 patients are being treated at the COVID Medical Treatment Centre in Hambantota which has a bed capacity of only 150.
"The bed capacity of 25 COVID Medical Treatment Centres in the Southern Province is 2,408, however at present, 2,270 COVID patients are being treated at these centres. A number of beds at these centres have been reserved for critical patients. Arrangements are being made to add more beds to these centres and to carry out the patient admission without interruption," Southern Province Health Services Director Chandima Siritunga stated.
