No lockdown, some restrictions in effect - Army Chief

A decision has been taken not to impose a countrywide lockdown following a crucial discussion held with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa over the prevailing COVID-19 situation, Head of the National Operation Centre for the Prevention of COVID-19 Army Commander General Shavendra Silva told the Daily News.

However, he said that several restrictions will be imposed pertaining to public gatherings.

Accordingly, he said that weddings being held at reception halls with a capacity of over 500 people will be limited to 150 while the places of less than 500 capacity will be limited to 100.

Also, a maximum of 25 people are allowed to attend funerals at any given time with effect from midnight today.

He also said that all in-person State functions would be postponed until September 1.

With regard to an earlier circular recalling all State sector employees back to work, he said that the decision had been reversed and the number of staff members required for the operation of their services would be decided by the relevant institution heads.Meanwhile, General Silva appealed to the public to continue to adhere to the health guidelines such as wearing of masks, washing or sanitizing hands and maintaining social distancing etc. to prevent the rapid spread of the virus. He also urged the public to curtail all unnecessary travel and to avoid crowded places and public places.
