Sajith : Opposition Leader, Ranjith : Deputy Speaker, New parliament appointments

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene was unanimously elected as the new Speaker of the 09th Parliament of Sri Lanka today.

MP Abeywardene’s name was proposed by Minister of Foreign Relations Dinesh Gunawardena and seconded by MP Ranjith Siyambalapitiya.

Minister Dinesh Gunawardena was recognized as the Leader of the House, while Minister of Highways Johnston Fernando was announced as the Chief Government Whip.

MP Ranjith Siyambalapitiya was also unanimously elected as the Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP Angajan Ramanathan was thereafter elected as the Deputy- Chairperson of Committees.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene then recognized Leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya Sajith Premadasa as the Leader of the Opposition of the Parliament.

The inaugural session of the 09th Parliament of Sri Lanka commenced this morning with proceedings being temporarily suspended till 03.00 p.m. (Newswire)
