Ministry of Highways clarifies Road project through Sinharaja Forest

The Ministry of Highways has clarified that the Neluwa- Lankagama Road development project was launched on the request of area residents.

Construction of one stretch of the road is said to have commenced through the Sinharaja Forest which is a world heritage site declared by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The construction drew protests, following which President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday instructed to temporarily suspend the road development work taking place inside the Sinharaja Forest.

The instruction comes after the Centre for Environmental and Nature Studies of Sri Lanka (CENS) had filed a complaint with UNESCO in this regard. (Newswire)
