As India has decided to open international travel from December 15, the risk of importing the new variant named Omicron would increase.

Omicron was first reported by South Africa on Thursday and was declared as a “variant of concern” by the World Health Organization on Friday. After South Africa, it was identified in many other countries namely Israel, Hong Kong, Botswana, Germany, Italy, and the UK by Saturday.

On Saturday, India mandated special precautions for travelers from certain African nations as a precautionary measure. The Prime Minister had also chaired a meeting with top officials to discuss the evolving scenario.

While early information shows that the new variant might be more transmissible due to its multiple mutations, more data is awaited to identify its impact on vaccine efficacy. The WHO said in a statement on Friday that it may take a few weeks to collect more information on Omicron.
