COVID-19 jabs for Sri Lankans seeking foreign employment

Labour Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva says that a special programme will be implemented to provide COVID-19 vaccines for Sri Lankans who are aspiring to go abroad for employment.

The Minister said those going abroad will be provided with the vaccines approved by the respective countries.

At present, nearly 8,000 Sri Lankan workers who have been granted work permits and visas in about 15 countries are expected to receive the COVID-19 vaccines, which are accepted by those countries.

The Minister revealed this following a discussion with Health Ministry officials, including Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi.

The selected workers will travel to Dubai, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Seychelles, Singapore, South Korea, Maldives, Malaysia, Israel and Cyprus for employment.

Accordingly, the focus is on giving the first dose of the vaccine to all of them at a centre in Colombo next week and giving them the second dose as scheduled and facilitating them to go abroad within the next two months.
