COVID-19 Alpha variant found in Batticaloa, Trincomalee

The Alpha Variant of the COVID-19 was detected in patients from the Batticaloa and Trincomalee districts, yesterday. It had been initially detected in a patient who was PCR-tested at the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital and later found in a resident of Trincomalee.

Batticaloa Teaching Hospital Microbiologist Dr. P. Devakanthan stated that an investigation is being conducted as to how their patient had contracted the variant, as well as whom they may have passed it on to. The Sri Jayawardenepura University is investigating the other case.

It is yet to be determined as to how far the new variant has spread throughout the community.

Those infected by it have been said to be asymptomatic so far. Health officials stated that in the wake of this, they would expedite PCR tests and postmortems soon.
