Number of COVID-19 patients in Anuradhapura increase
The Health authorities said that due to the carelessness of the people, more than 200 persons infected with COVID-19 are discovered daily in the Anuradhapura District alone and as a result, COVID-19 treatment centres in the district are once again filling up with patients.
As of now, schools in a number of areas of the Anuradhapura District are facing a COVID-19 with a number of teachers and students in about 70 schools affected with COVID-19.
“Nine treatment centres for COVID-19 patients have been established in the Anuradhapura District and many of them are full,” Anuradhapura District Epidemiology Consultant Dr. Thejana Somatillaka said.
He said an increase in the number of COVID-19 patients have been recorded over the past few days and about 800 patients being treated at home.
At the same time, COVID-19 infected teachers and children are being identified daily from a number of schools in the district with over 130 students and teachers testing positive for the virus. Due to this, some schools have been closed and other schools have taken steps to suspend classes where COVID-19 infected students have been identified from.
Dr. Somatillaka said that about 60 teachers and 300 students are in quarantine at present, and requested parents to avoid sending children suffering from fever, colds and coughs to school.
It is also reported that 40 employees from a number of hotels in Anuradhapura have tested positive for COVID-19 during the past few days. A hotel employee living in a hostel near Anuradhapura city has also tested positive resulting in about 400 other hoteliers being sent on quarantine.
Dr. Somatillaka further said that the reason for the rapid spread of the virus is a result of people who participate in various functions including weddings, funerals and other events failing to adhere to health guidelines.
