PCFM traders thanks health authorities for quick jabs

Peliyagoda Central Fish Market (PCFM) Chairman Jayasiri Wickramarachchi yesterday thanked health authorities for taking immediate measures to vaccinate fish traders at the PCFM.

He requested retail fish traders and customers who have not yet received vaccinations to refrain from visiting the fish market considering the possible health risk that could eventually lead to the fish market closing down once again.

While thanking the Government for allowing the PCFM to open the stalls all seven days, the Chairman said it was a commendable decision. He added that the authorities should focus attention towards unvaccinated traders and customers who visit the market.

He said that during the last few months the PCFM was opened only a few days owing to the health situation and it caused the traders to undergo severe hardships.

The fish sellers had to send large stocks of fish to dumping grounds due to lack of deepfreeze facilities, and some fish were sent to manufacture dry fish. He said the Fish market now receives stocks only from areas where the ocean waters have not been affected following the X-Press Pearl ship tragedy and fish buyers and customers should not get any fear over the quality of the fish being sold at the market.
