CVS has administered 10 million COVID-19 vaccine doses as of April 1.

CVS just surpassed 10 million COVID-19 vaccine doses given to people in the US.

The company announced April 1 it had given more than 10 million vaccine shots in about 2,000 stores across 44 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, DC.

CVS said it now has the capacity to administer up to 25 million shots per month.

The US has administered at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to 97,226,718 adults - or 37% of the population - as of Thursday. The White House announced this week more than half of all seniors are fully vaccinated against the disease.

"We're working hard to help America fight COVID-19 by breaking down barriers to equitable health care, especially in communities suffering most during the pandemic," CEO Karen Lynch said in a release.

Black, Hispanic, and Native American individuals represent 34% of all in-store vaccine appointments, CVS said, a 12% increase its stores' baseline community representation for those groups. Experts said Black people had received fewer initial doses of the COVID-19 vaccine due to few sites in neighborhoods of color and lack of community outreach.

In February, the US authorized thousands of pharmacies to administer COVID-19 vaccine doses free of charge. Though nursing homes initially complained CVS and Walgreens had been slow to administer doses to residents, the pace of the vaccine rollout sped up since March.

Walgreens said on an earnings call Wednesday the pharmacy has administered 8 million COVID-19 vaccine shots so far, including 4 million just in March.
