Nancy Pelosi broke San Francisco COVID-19 rules to get a salon treatment indoors, Fox News reported.

In security footage from Tuesday shared with the channel, the House Speaker can be seen walking through eSalon, with wet hair and a mask round her neck.

Her spokesman, Drew Hammill, defended Pelosi by saying the stylist told her that city rules allowed for one customer at a time to have their hair cut inside. He said she followed the rules "as presented" to her.

However, the current San Francisco virus rules do not allow for any indoor salon treatments — only outdoor.

In the video, Pelosi is followed by another person — the stylist, according to the channel — who is wearing a mask. The footage is dated Monday 3:08 p.m., according to the channel.

It is unclear if the Speaker subsequently put a mask on. The San Francisco health rules say that people having their hair cut should keep wearing a mask even during the process.

Pelosi has previously advocated for a nationwide mask mandate, and criticized President Donald Trump for not using one.

eSalon's owner Erica Kious said to Fox News that she could not control what the stylists there do as they are independent contractors who rent their space from her.

One of the stylists messaged her on Sunday night to say they would be in the next day, she told the channel.

"Pelosi assistant just messaged me to do her hair," was the message she received, according to screengrabs obtained by the channel.

"I was like, are you kidding me right now? Do I let this happen? What do I do?" Kious told Fox News.

She went on to call the situation "a slap in the face" because "no one else can go in, and I can't work."

Pelosi has previously called President Donald "cowardly" for the many occasions he has gone without a mask.

"Not wearing a mask himself as an example to the country? How cowardly is that?" she said in an interview with NPR in July

Pelosi spokesperson Drew Hammill told Fox News that the Speaker always wears a mask, and said that the salon had told her indoor appointments were allowed.

"The Speaker always wears a mask and complies with local COVID requirements," he said.

"This business offered for the Speaker to come in on Monday and told her they were allowed by the city to have one customer at a time in the business. The Speaker complied with the rules as presented to her by this establishment."

Business Insider has contacted Pelosi's office for further comment but did not immediately receive a reply.

Kious told Fox News that Pelosi had a wash and a blow-dry. Monday's update for outdoors hairdressing discourages — but does not ban — lengthy blow-drying.
