356 Elephants Died Suddenly in Botswana. The Cause Is a Mystery.
The mystery of more than 350 elephants suddenly dying deepens as their intact ivory tusks suggests poachers are not responsible.
The first unusual deaths were reported in May, when 169 elephants died in a short period. Since then, the death toll has almost doubled. The mammals seem to be dropping dead near waterholes in Africa across the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana.
Some questioned whether Cyanide poisoning – a technique often used by Zimbabwe poachers – could be the cause of death. However, animals scavenging on the carcasses do not appear to be dying.
Elephants Without Borders has said that the fact the animals are dying in ‘sternal position on their chests,’ suggests ‘a fast and sudden death.’ The non-profit group also recorded a number of live elephants that ‘appeared to be weak, lethargic and emaciated,’ with some ‘disorientated’ and showing ‘signs of partial paralysis.’
The death toll is therefore likely to increase in the coming weeks. ‘One elephant was observed walking in circles, unable to change direction although being encouraged by other herd members,’ the group said, noting that this is usually a sign of neurological impairment.
Dr Niall McCann, the director of National Park Rescue, said the mass die-off was unprecedented. Covid-19 has also been mentioned as a possible cause but this is unlikely.
