Headlines 9am: Pakistan’s COVID-19 tally nearing 200,000, petrol prices increase

Here are the headlines from SAMAA TV’s 9am bulletin:

  • Seventy-four more people have passed away from the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours. More than 3,100 new cases have been reported taking the total virus tally in the country to 197,705. Over 84,000 people have recovered so far.
  • The bodies of three children were found in a trunk in a house in Rawalpindi. Their father had murdered them over an argument with his wife. He was arrested in Sukkur and admitted to his crime. He was trying to flee to Karachi.
  • A foreign national staying at the girl’s hostel at Karachi University has filed a complaint of harassment and sexual assault. An FIR has been registered at the Mobina police station. According to the management of the hostel, no man is allowed inside.
  • Petrol prices across the country have increased by Rs25 a litre. From midnight, the commodity is being sold at Rs100 per litre. High speed diesel and kerosene prices have increased by Rs21 and Rs23.5.
  • Former Jamaat-e-Islami chief Syed Munawwar Hasan’s funeral prayers will be offered at the Eidgah Ground in Karachi’s North Nazimabad after Zuhr prayers. He passed away on Friday at the age of 78. According to Hasan’s family, he was very sick and under treatment at Imam Clinic. Hasan was recently put on the ventilator after his health worsened.
  • A PIA flight coming from London to Lahore has been cancelled due to technical issues. Passengers have been shifted to a hotel after being made to wait for five hours. A new flight will be sent from Pakistan.
  • A fire erupted in a car and a rickshaw in Karachi’s PIB Colony. The fire brigade put out the fire and suspect it may have been started due to a short circuit.
