Curfew last option, get jabbed soon - Minister

The Government yesterday assured that a curfew will be enforced only as the final attempt to curtail the spread of COVID-19.

Addressing the media at the Government Information Department yesterday, Co-Cabinet spokesman Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said that mass vaccination is the only long-term solution to the current COVID-19 crisis.

Even after receiving both doses of the COVID 19 vaccine, people should strictly follow protective measures and hygiene measures. He said that a decision on imposing a curfew will have to be taken if the public does not follow the health guidelines.

The Minister said that earlier people refused to take vaccines due to undue fears. But now we can see people lined up in queues to get jabbed after realizing the critical condition of this pandemic.

He said certain Opposition members levelled allegations against the government claiming that the government had no sufficient funds to obtain the vaccines. But now the government has already achieved great success in the country’s vaccination drive.

Except for the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, all other WHO-approved vaccines are currently available in the country.

“After identifying the gravity of the pandemic, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa instructed relevant authorities to purchase vaccines from where ever in the world since he firmly believes that vaccination is the only weapon to fight against COVID-19,” the Minister said.
