Former US President Donald Trump on Wednesday boasted of "big crowds" in Ohio for his first post-presidential rally that is not due to take place until Saturday.

"Big crowds in the Great State of Ohio this weekend for the Trump rally," Trump said in a statement issued Wednesday.

"See you on Saturday night. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, AGAIN!"

A rally called by Trump in Tulsa last year was hit by a surprisingly low turnout, despite the former president boasting in advance of having packed out the stadium.

Trump last week said in a statement issued through his Save America PAC that he would hold the first of four rallies at Lorain County Fairgrounds in Wellington, Ohio, on Saturday.

It will be the first rally Trump has spoken at since the January 6 "Stop the Steal" event in Washington, shortly after which hundreds of attendees stormed the Capitol building as they sought to overturn Joe Biden's election certification.

A statement issued through his Save America PAC, which was cited by the Daily Mail, said the rally would be "President Trump's first of many appearances in support of candidates and causes that further the MAGA agenda and accomplishments of President Trump's administration."

The statement said the Ohio rally was to support Max Miller, a congressional candidate who is challenging Rep. Anthony Gonzalez, an incumbent Republican who voted in January to impeach Trump.

Trump in February endorsed Miller, calling him a "wonderful person who did a great job at the White House and will be a fantastic Congressman."

"He is a Marine Veteran, a son of Ohio, and a true PATRIOT. Current Rep. Anthony Gonzalez should not be representing the people of the 16th district because he does not represent their interest or their heart," Trump said.
