China pledges help for Post-COVID recovery

China yesterday assured assistance to revive Sri Lanka’s economy in the aftermath of Covid 19 pandemic.

Acting Chinese ambassador Hu Wei informed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa that his country considers Sri Lanka as a unique friend who has stood with at all times.

“We are fully prepared to help Sri Lanka revive its economy in the aftermath of this disaster,” Hu Wei said, during his meeting with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday.

The Acting Chinese ambassador quoting a Chinese proverb that a “friend in need is a friend indeed” expressed gratitude to the Sri Lankan Government’s policy towards his country.

The Acting ambassador said the Chinese Government, companies and banks are prepared to assist Sri Lanka to revive its economy in the post Covid 19 period. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in turn reminded how China helped Sri Lanka as a true and honest friend since signing the Rubber Rice pact. He noted that Chinese assistance helped recover the economy in the post conflict era.

President Rajapaksa opined that Covid 19 outbreak has adversely affected the Sri Lanka’s economy adding that the country is faced with the challenge of dwindling forex reserves as the income received from the apparel industry and tourism sector has reduced drastically. The President said that Sri Lanka will adopt a novel development approach based on a production economy and expected the support of all friendly countries to make it a reality. Our main objective is not to obtain loans or financial assistance but to attract more investments for the increase of production, he said.

The President invited China to make investments as the country has vast opportunities in many sectors including agriculture production and construction.
