Armie Hammer's ex-wife Elizabeth Chambers says going through their divorce in the public eye was 'absolute hell'

Elizabeth Chambers is speaking up about her public divorce from Armie Hammer, which was finalized in June 2023.
Chambers is a cast member on the new Freeform docuseries drama "Grand Cayman: Secrets in Paradise," which premieres Tuesday. It follows a group of locals and expats who live on the largest of the Cayman islands — including Chambers, who moved there with Hammer and their children in 2020.
However, she filed for divorce from Hammer in June 2020. And in January 2021, unverified messages circulated that appeared to show that Hammer had a cannibalism fetish. In March 2021, a woman accused him of rape. The Los Angeles District Attorney's office confirmed in June 2023 that it had declined to file charges against Hammer, citing "insufficient evidence." Hammer has consistently denied the sexual assault allegations.
In the first episode of "Grand Cayman," Chambers jokes that she fell victim to the "Cayman Curse," which is when a couple moves to Grand Cayman together and then breaks up.
"I went through a very public divorce. It was riddled with scandal, and stories were coming out each day, horrific articles, and I was learning about them as it happened," Chambers recalls in a confessional in the episode.
Chambers has previously spoken about being caught unaware by the accusations against Hammer and told Elle that she learned information at the same time as the public. During the episode, Chambers says that her and Hammer's divorce is "almost final," which places filming sometime in early 2023.
"The life that we had planned for years basically shattered," Chambers says. "That was a really painful period of time. Doing that on a more public platform, it was absolute hell, and I wouldn't wish it upon anyone."
Chambers says in the episode that the "trauma" she had sustained since 2021 was in the past, and that she's ready to move on and have a "fresh start" on Grand Cayman by opening a Bird Bakery location there. Chambers founded the company back in 2012 in her native San Antonio, before opening additional locations in Dallas and Greenwood Village, Colorado.
Later in the episode, however, other members of the cast read and discuss Hammer's February 2023 interview with Air Mail, his first since the sexual abuse allegations. Chambers, however, refuses to address the article when prompted in a confessional, telling a producer, "End of discussion."
"I lived it. I know it. I know the truth. So, at the end of the day, unless you were there, you don't know," Chambers says.
"Grand Cayman: Secrets in Paradise" airs Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m. ET on Freeform, with new episodes available the next day on Hulu.
