The 11 world cities with the best quality of life

Vienna, Austria
  • Vienna is still the most livable city in the world, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Liveability Index for 2023.
  • This year's ranking had 173 cities, and the index is based on different categories like infrastructure.
  • Osaka, Japan, and Auckland, New Zealand, both ranked No. 10 this year.

Vienna continues to be considered the most livable city.

That's according to this year's Global Liveability Index from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) that was just published. According to the new report, the 2023 survey the index is based on was done from February 13 to March 12. The index is based on five categories measuring various aspects of the quality of life in each city, such as healthcare and infrastructure. The infrastructure category for instance includes things like the "quality of public transport," and the "availability of good quality housing," per the report.

"The concept of liveability is simple: it assesses which locations around the world provide the best or worst living conditions," the new EIU report said. "Our liveability rating quantifies the challenges that might be presented to an individual's lifestyle in any given location, and allows for direct comparison between locations."

Vienna had an index of 98.4 out of 100. Vienna ranked No. 1 out of the 173 cities included this year due to "its winning combination of stability, good culture and entertainment, reliable infrastructure, and exemplary education and health services," according to the report.

"It has occupied this position regularly over the past several years, with only the covid-19 pandemic causing the city to vacate its place at the top spot," the report continued.

Vienna was No. 1 last year too out of 172 cities instead of 173 cities, as Kyiv, Ukraine, wasn't part of the ranking last year. Copenhagen, Denmark, stayed as the second-most liveable city this year. Vancouver, Canada, also didn't move from its spot on the 2022 list, coming in at No. 5.

Auckland, New Zealand, and Osaka, Japan, tied for the No. 10 spot this year. They both had an index of 96.0. Auckland was noted as one of the "biggest movers up the ranking in the past 12 months." Osaka tied for the No. 10 spot last year with Melbourne, Australia.
