A 25-year-old endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders won the Democratic primary in Orlando, Florida on Tuesday, setting him on a clear path to becoming the first Gen Z member of Congress.

Maxwell Alejandro Frost won the nomination for Florida's 10th congressional district, as Insider reported.

Since the Orlando-based seat is considered a solidly Democratic district, he is almost certain to win in November.

The gun control advocate beat out nine other competitors, including state senator Randolph Bracy and former Florida Rep. Corrine Brown.

"WE WON!!!," Maxwell tweeted after his win. "We won because of our message: Love. That no matter who you are, you deserve healthcare, a livable wage, and to live free from gun violence. We made history tonight."

At 25, Frost just qualifies for the age requirement to serve in the House of Representatives. When the new Congress begins on January 3, 2023, he will be a 13 days from his 26th birthday.

The Pew Research Center considers anyone born between 1997 and 2012 to be Gen Z.

He has campaigned on key progressive issues, including Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and an end to gun violence, Insider's Bryan Metzger reported in May.

The 25-year-old not only managed to build up strong financial resources but also received the backing of several members of Congress, including Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Reps. Pramila Jayapal of Washington, Jamie Raskin of Maryland, Insider reported.

Vermont senator Sanders also publicly endorsed Maxwell in the week leading up to the election, calling the 25-year-old "a fierce advocate in the fight to end gun violence" who has "inspired young people to vote."

Maxwell first became involved in politics after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, telling Metzger that it was his "call to action."

Frost told Insider that he didn't want to align himself with any particular faction within the Democratic Party, but praised Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut for his efforts to combat gun violence and President Joe Biden on ensuring the rapid distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.

"I wouldn't necessarily put myself in a specific box," he told Insider.
