Sue Gray report: Boris Johnson to give statement after partygate inquiry 'update' published
- Boris Johnson received an "update" into the partygate inquiry from Sue Gray on Monday morning.
- The update will be made public ahead of a statement from the prime minister Monday afternoon.
- Johnson continues to insist he did nothing wrong.
Boris Johnson has been handed an "update" into the partygate inquiry being overseen by senior civil servant Sue Gray, Number 10 confirmed Monday.
The prime minister, who is under fire for his handling of multiple allegations of illegal parties held during lockdown, will deliver a statement to the House of Commons mid-afternoon.
The update will also be made available to the public before Johnson speaks.
However it is not yet clear what form this will take after the Metropolitan Police requested that Gray would make "minimal reference" to those events under criminal investigation.
A Cabinet Office spokesperson said just after 11 a.m. Monday: "We can confirm that Sue Gray has provided an update on her investigations to the Prime Minister."
He spoke briefly with Gray on Sunday, regarding the timing of the publication, but did not discuss the details of the report, his spokesman told reporters this morning.
Johnson has been meeting MPs privately and in small groups over the last fortnight in a bid to shore up support, with one backbencher telling Insider he had pleading for his job.
He has insisted that he did not believe he breached rules at the time, despite reportedly attending at least two events that broke England's COVID-19 rules at the time.
Asked whether he still felt he had done anything wrong, Johnson told broadcasters: "You are going to have and see the outcome of investigations but of course I stick absolutely to what I said in the past."
"You will have to wait and see both what Sue says and what the Met says — I'm here to talk about the second anniversary of Brexit."
