First dose coverage reaches 100%

The Health Promotion Bureau (HPB) yesterday said that eighty per cent of the population above 30 years has been fully vaccinated while 100 per cent of the population above 30 years has received the first jab of the COVID vaccine.

Health Promotion Bureau Director Dr. Ranjith Batuwanthudawa said 60 per cent of the entire population has already received the first jab while 40 per cent of the population has been fully vaccinated through the vaccination drive which is progressing rapidly covering all parts of the country.

He said that the people have shown an eagerness to have the vaccine as early as possible and those who have been fully vaccinated should also follow the COVID-19 guidelines to protect themselves from the virus.

The Health Ministry’s Epidemiological Department said that over 12,823,147 persons in the country have already received the first jab while 9,414,851 persons have received the second jab by September 6.

Home Affairs Ministry Secretary N.H.M. Chitrananda said that 88 per cent of people above 60 years in Polonnaruwa, 80 per cent in Kurunegala, 75 per cent in Ampara, 88 per cent in Puttalam, 85 per cent in Matale and 80 per cent in Colombo has been vaccinated.

Health officials along with Forces personnel have visited the houses of those suffering from serious illnesses and disability to get them vaccinated after obtaining the necessary information from the Grama Niladharis concerned. Over 8,000 out of 8,806 living in Homes for the Elders have been fully vaccinated. Sri Lanka has received more than 27 million vaccine doses as of yesterday through purchases, country donations and through COVAX.
