Canada's last fully intact ice shelf has suddenly collapsed, forming a Manhattan-sized iceberg

  • Almost half of Canada's last remaining intact ice shelf has suddenly collapsed into the ocean.
  • Satellite images show that it formed two icebergs, one of which is almost the size of Manhattan.
  • The collapse comes amid a summer that's seen hotter-than-average temperatures, which scientists say is a result of climate change.
  • A research camp was lost in the collapse.

A massive chunk of Canada's last fully intact ice shelf, some 4,000 years old, has broken off, reducing the shelf by more than half, scientists reported last Sunday. After separating from the shelf, the piece split in two, forming an iceberg almost the size of Manhattan.

Climate change likely fueled the collapse of the shelf, researchers said. This summer, the region's temperature was 9 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the 1980 to 2010 average, Luke Copland, a glaciology professor at the University of Ottawa, told the Associated Press.

OnlyFans is an online platform where users subscribe to content from creators of all kinds, but it's especially known for explicit content that's forbidden on other social media sites.

In recent years, OnlyFans has become the preeminent platform for people looking to make money off selfies — particularly risque ones. Sex workers, a term used to describe people who provide sexual services such as explicit images or phone sex for income, use OnlyFans to conceal this content behind a paywall and charge for subscriptions.

CDC wants Americans to stop drinking hand sanitiser

The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention warned Americans once again to stop swallowing hand sanitiser.

So far, four people have died in the US while several others have complained of impaired vision or seizures after drinking santisier.

The department cautioned that hand sanitisers are useful for cleaning hands during the coronavirus outbreak, but not safe to swallow. “Alcohol-based hand sanitiser products should never be ingested,” the CDC said.

Reports of people consuming sanitisers began to pour in after President Donald Trump suggested injecting them into people to avoid contracting COVID-19. The medical community, however, was quick to lambast the president.

“And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning?” Trump had said during a White House coronavirus task force briefing in July.

American doctors took to social media to clarify that disinfectants are hazardous and can easily poison the stomach if ingested.

The country is witnessing a second surge in the coronavirus cases. It has reported almost five million infections and 161,000 fatalities so far.

Our nation has never been less American than in 2020, when 'freedom' is used as an excuse to ignore the common good, says NYU professor Scott Galloway

  • Scott Galloway is a bestselling author and professor of marketing at NYU Stern.
  • The following is his recent blog post, republished with permission. It originally ran on his blog, "No Mercy / No Malice."
  • Galloway explains his frustration with the country's lack of "unity of purpose" to fight COVID-19, comparing Americans who now complain about wearing face masks to those in WWII, who accepted food ration regulations and eagerly scrimped and saved to buy war bonds to support the war effort.
  • America is about a "willingness to sacrifice for one another and future generations," he says — yet mask-refusers today prefer to conflate "freedom" as an excuse to avoid making minor, short-term concessions for the public good.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

America's involvement in WWII lasted three years and nine months, and 405,399 Americans perished (297 per day). US forces have been fighting in Afghanistan for 19 years, and we've lost 2,285 service members (one every three days). In WWII, almost a third of fruits and vegetables were harvested from "Victory Gardens" planted in people's backyards. You couldn't find chocolate or nylons. Diapers and food staples were rationed, and you could be kicked off a plane to make room for servicemen.
