Why intelligent and high-performing women fall for toxic partners

businesswomanHero Images/Getty

  • It may seem like every high-powered woman you know is dating someone toxic, but successful women don't actually have lower standards when it comes to relationships.
  • Instead, research shows that their driven nature attracts toxic partners, and means that they're used to working hard.
  • Toss satisfying sex into the mix, which builds chemistry, and an unhealthy relationship can quickly become a toxic one.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Ever wonder why your best friend — a total genius with the biggest brain and warmest heart — is dating some "loser" in your eyes who doesn't treat her nearly as well as you know she deserves? Or why your colleague whose shoes you dream of filling someday comes to the office every morning complaining about her husband's absolutely cringe-worthy behaviors?

How in the world did these smart, successful women end up in such toxic relationships?

Well, research says that these types of women are actually more likely to become "addicted" to toxic men than others. In other words, the people you'd never expect to fall for those who treat them horribly are ... usually the ones who do.

So why do women with such high standards in seemingly every other aspect of their lives seem to have such low standards in relationships? It's a lot more complicated than you'd think — and in the end, it has next to nothing to do with low standards (or weaknesses!) after all.

1. High-performance women are willing to put in the work

Dane Deaner/Unsplash

Successful women are successful because they've put in the work. They know that commitment reaps rewards, and they apply that same attitude in their relationships. Putting in the effort in other parts of their lives has usually gotten them the results they're after; why would love be any different?

"Generally, you will transfer this understanding without even thinking about it — that chances are if you work hard on your relationships, they're going to be good," psychologist and executive coach Perpetua Neo told INSIDER. "Add that together with empathy and it can be really difficult because you start to tax yourself with trying to understand why he is the way he is."

In other words, high-performance women tend to just keep giving and giving and giving ...

2. Toxic men tend to target powerful women

Monkey Business Images/Shutterstock

Successful women aren't weak — rather, they're targets for all reasons that they're actually the opposite of weak.

"It's a common misperception that these men go for weak women; it's quite the opposite — these pathologically self-centered guys want a strong woman who has a lot to give," writes Huff Post contributor and founder and CEO of Date Like a Grownup, Bobbi Palmer.

So why do narcissistic men prey on powerful women? Palmer says it's because these types of men look for women who can constantly stroke their "surprisingly fragile" egos. They also want someone "steady and strong" they can count on to take care of them — particularly someone empathetic to attend to their "child-like needs" and someone smart who they can prove they're even smarter. They also tend to want self-sufficient women so they don't actually have to take care of the woman's needs, she says.

What do [these women] get in return? The quintessential alpha male who is exciting, fun, charming and witty," she says, which of course complicates things. "He's funny, intense and, when you are with him, there is never a dull moment. You feel he 'gets' you. You have chemistry and feel high from his attention. For a while, anyway."

3. Their sex lives are blinding

Shutterstock

It's easy to become blinded by love and, frankly, good sex. This is especially true because most people don't show their true, toxic colors right off the bat — and if a relationship starts off as a loving, mutually beneficial and growth-oriented one, it's difficult to admit it when that relationship takes a sour turn (especially for strong-headed women who tend to be fixers).

Toss satisfying sex into the mix, which builds chemistry, and an unhealthy relationship can quickly become a toxic one. That's because studies overwhelmingly show that men who possess the Dark Triad personality traits (narcissism, psychopathy and Machiavellism) are adept at beginning new relationships. They have a greater willingness and ability to compete with their own sex and, thus, mate more.

Meanwhile, women tend to demonstrate dueling desires: a loving and committed partner and an attraction to men with darker personality traits, usually for the shorter term. In other words, women's innate sexual selection comes into play — and strong women who are in touch with and confident in their sexuality may pay more mind to that.

  • The newspaper listed the names of 1,000 people who died of COVID-19 — just 1% of the total death toll.
  • The newspaper staff combed through obituaries and death notices for people whose cause of death was listed as COVID-19, and listed people's names, ages, and facts about their lives.
  • An editor for the paper said she realized there was "a little bit of a fatigue with the data" among both Times journalists and the general public, and so the newspaper sought to visualize the extent of the loss.

  • Only half of Americans (55%) say they would get vaccinated against the novel coronavirus, if and when a vaccine becomes available, according to a new YouGov survey.
  • Another 26% said they were unsure about getting innoculated, while one in five said that they not get vaccinated at all.
  • The poll comes at a time where more than 100 potential coronavirus vaccines in development and health experts are emphasizing that a vaccine will be needed to return life to normal.
  • The sentiments echo another more recent survey by Reuters, which shows that a quarter of Americans have little or no interest in taking a vaccine.
  • Some participants however have said that their opinion might change, if the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or scientific studies proved that the vaccine was safe to take.

Rashes, lethargy, and the terror of the unknown: What it's like to survive Kawasaki disease, the rare childhood illness that scientists are scrambling to understand in the coronavirus crisis

eric kinnellSupplied by Eric Kinnell

  • Eric Kinnell, now aged 42, nearly died from a bout of exceptionally rare Kawasaki disease as a five-year-old boy.
  • The disease is receiving renewed attention because it has very similar characteristics to a new syndrome surging in children during the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Kinnell had a temperature of 105 F, a rash all over his body, a swelling in his neck the size of a golf ball, and was so lethargic he couldn't walk when he reached hospital.
  • He told Business Insider that the worst part for his parents was the "terror" of the unknown, leading them to clutch at a now-discredited theory that it was caused by carpet shampoo, blaming themselves.
  • Scientists are still working to establish the connection between the new Kawasaki-like disease and the coronavirus.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Eric Kinnell was five years old when his family's Catholic priest came to perform his last rites.

The little boy had first come to hospital after suffering for about a week with what seemed like heavy flu. He was so lethargic he couldn't walk, and had a temperature of 105 degrees.

“Learn 10 new words every day” Sajith responds to criticism of his “pompous English” on social media

A live online discussion was held last Wednesday (20th) under the theme of “COVID-19: A New World Order – Education: Thinking outside the box” with the Leader of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and former Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, where young and experienced professionals in the field of education took part in discussing about the field of education in an era hit by the continuous threat of Covid-19.

Once the discussion was reaching towards its end, the host of the discussion asked the SJB Leader about his usage of English, particularly on social media, which has come under a lot of criticism for the reason that it is too “heavy” for his audience to understand. Further to that, he also asked whether someone else operates Sajith Premadasa’s social media accounts for him.

In response to the queries, Mr. Premadasa told in a lighter vein that there was a notion among some that he doesn’t know English and now people think that he knows too much English. He also pointed out that there’s no external persons involved in handling his SM accounts, but himself.

Further to the response, he said that it was his father Late R. Premadasa’s advice to learn at least 10 new English words each day and that such practice has made him what he is today. Ending the conversation on yet another lighter note, he also stated that those who want to learn, may note down 10 English words from his social media posts each day with a dictionary or thesaurus’s alongside them, which will make Sri Lanka a country with better English literacy.
